2020 Triumph Street Triple R First Look
Triumph announced updates for the Street Triple R for 2020, with an updated engine, a up-and-down quickshifter and revised styling, as well as a lower MSRP than the 2019 model.
The 2020 Triumph Street Triple R still claims 116 hp at 12,000 rpm and 57 lb-ft. at 9400 rpm, the same as the 2019 model, but Triumph says the engine should feel more responsive thanks to a 7% reduction in rotational inertia. This is thanks to the more precise machining process used on the crankshaft, clutch and transmission that Triumph started employing with the Street Triple RS that was developed from Triumph’s Moto2 program. Triumph also refined the airbox and exhaust system, claiming a crisper, more distinctive tone (while making it Euro 5 compliant).
The engine has three operating modes, Road, Rain and Sport, with Rain mode restricting engine output to 99 hp. As with the RS model, Triumph modified the transmission, giving the Street Triple R shorter first and second gear ratios. The Street Triple R uses a slip and assist clutch for reduced clutch lever effort, as well as a quickshifter. ABS and traction control are standard.
Showa supplies the 41mm inverted separate function big piston forks and piggyback reservoir monoshock. Preload, compression and rebound damping is fully adjustable for both front and rear suspension. The braking system is comprised of dual Brembo M4.3 four-piston monoblock calipers up front and a Brembo single-piston sliding caliper at the rear. The Street Triple R comes with Pirelli Diablo Rosso III tires.
Visually, the R receives the same aggressive styling update as the Street Triple RS, including a more pronounced fly screen and air intake and twin LED headlights.
Other features include a 32.5-inch seat height (30.7 inches on the low-ride height version), a 4.6 gallon tank and a claimed dry weight of 370 pounds.
The 2020 Triumph Street Triple R comes in two colors: Sapphire Black or Matte Silver Ice. Both come with red and silver graphics, a red rear subframe and hand-painted red wheel pin stripes. U.S. pricing is set at $10,500, down from $11,250 for the 2019 model. Canadian pricing is listed at $11,500 (compared to $12,650 for the 2019 version).
