2026 saw Toni Bou, the ‘King of Trials’ win an incredible 40th FIM World title
Winning run for invincible pairing of Bou and Repsol Honda HRC stretches back to 2007
Comprising both national and team crowns, Bou’s total title tally since joining Honda reaches an unprecedented 70 titles
Toni Bou may be the most successful athlete that many people have never heard of. This year, as he celebrated his 40th birthday, he also achieved an astonishing 40th World Championship title, further cementing a legacy unlike any other in motorcycle sport. What he has accomplished across more than two decades of competition transcends the traditional definition of greatness.
Numbers alone struggle to convey the scale of Bou’s dominance, but they offer a glimpse into a career unlike any other. His latest TrialGP crown marked a remarkable 40th FIM World Championship title, comprising 20 outdoor championships and 20 indoor X-Trial victories. Taking national and teams crowns into consideration, that total spirals to an almost unbelievable 70 titles. Having spent years redefining what success looks like in trials, the Spaniard continues to perform at a level that few athletes in any sport have ever sustained.
The Catalan’s first world title came in 2007, and no one has come close to dethroning him since. He has continued to redefine what’s possible on two wheels, blending supreme technical skill and balance with the relentless drive of a true champion.
Trial isn’t an easy sport, with riders required to complete a specially prepared technical course, which includes what looks like impossible jumps, vertical surfaces and other challenging obstacles on their specialised motorcycles. Throughout his years in the series, Bou has also seen many rules changes and format changes, but he’s adapted to all of it. His prowess throughout his career arguably means that this winning streak may never be matched again in this sport.
Trials bikes are unlike any other available motorcycle. Their low, seatless frames, large diameter wheels and tyres paired with relatively short wheelbases give them a distinctive silhouette. The Montesa Cota 4RT used by Bou is based on the commercially available model of the same name.
Honed by HRC in cooperation with Montesa Honda, Bou’s machine features a bespoke higher capacity engine powering the 70kg bike around the complex routes. A PGM-FI fuel system makes it possible to tailor engine response across varied terrains and conditions. Continuously refined over the years, the 4RT has been at the core of each and every one of Bou’s victories on the world stage since 2007.
Bou’s Trial journey began in 1999 where he made the decision to jump on a Trials motorcycle, after winning the bicycle trial world championship that year at the age of 13. It was a match made in heaven. Only two years later he was Junior Spanish Champion and then two years after that he made his World Trial debut. He joined Honda in 2007, winning his first indoor and outdoor world titles that year, and the rest is history.
In addition to his world titles, Bou has also won 11 national outdoor Trial titles and has helped Spain achieve 19 Trial des Nations titles, as well as the 2026 X-Trial des Nations title – events that see riders compete for their country, rather than their team.
It’s a staggering level of dominance, one that is unlikely to be seen again in any form of competitive motorsport, but what is the X factor that has enabled him to accumulate so much silverware?
“Reaching 40 world titles is extraordinary and demonstrates the incredible level he has maintained throughout all these years,” states former teammate and current Repsol Honda HRC Team Manager Takahisa Fujinami. “His commitment to training and ability to adapt to different riding conditions, whether indoor or outdoor, have allowed him to outcompete rivals for years. His strategic thinking is unparalleled. Toni has an incredible natural ability to ‘read’ a course and understand how best to ride it; whether that’s how to position himself on the bike, know where to pause for stability or where to take off for a jump – it’s something that he seems to have been born with.”
Since that first world title in 2007, Bou has enjoyed two decades of success but is aware that there is a whole host of younger riders who want to come through and steal his crown: “We always try to work as hard as possible. It is important to take good care of injuries because it is more difficult to recover and that is where young people have the biggest advantage. I still want to fight with the young riders who are pushing and that is a source of motivation.”
But what now? For someone who has won everything several times over, what is there still to achieve? “I am always obliged to win!” as the legend himself says. “We are also realistic, so one year it will end; that’s why we have to enjoy it. I look back and see everything we have achieved, and it is incredible. It’s been an especially emotional year having reached 40 world titles, so now it’s time to enjoy everything we’ve achieved.”
One other thing that makes Toni stand out is how humble and down to earth he is. That many titles could go to one’s head but he’s keen to highlight that he couldn’t do what he does without an incredible team around him.
“Without them one of this would be possible! The fact that the team has confidence in me is a very good thing. It gives me peace of mind. I think I’ve earned that during my career; they have earned my trust and I have earned theirs, and it is something nice. We know that titles can be lost and we could have lost them during these years, but this is sport. We have been lucky to experience something incredible. I only have words of gratitude for Honda and Repsol.”
It can’t be easy having someone like Toni as your teammate and it would be easy to let the thought of him being unbeatable wear you down. Current teammate Gabriel Marcelli appreciates having the best in the world alongside him, despite acknowledging that “racing against Bou sometimes feels like racing against a wall.” He’s keen to share the good points though: “He gets stronger every year and will be doing this for many years to come. He’s the best one and it’s super, super hard to beat him, but it makes me push myself every time and every day. So, for me, and probably for other riders, it’s helpful because it makes you a better rider.”
So what next for this champion of champions? Although there will be a small rest period from competing, Toni will soon be gearing up for another season of competition. The 2027 X-Trial championship gets underway next month on 28 November in Madrid and then it will be back to the usual routine of races. Will 2027 be another title winning year? Only time will tell, but you wouldn’t want to bet against him.
“In Trial, there is no limit,” concludes Bou. “The only thing I want is to improve what I did last time. It is always a very special moment when you reach a World Title. It’s always difficult to sleep the night after, and then you just want to win more!”
